Ahem

Ahem!

It was hard work, but finally I drifted off to sleep. My bedroom walls melted away and were replaced by the inside of a sports car. My P.J.’s turned into an airline captain’s uniform. I whisked into a parking lot and beamed with pride as I read the sign, “PILOT’S PARKING ONLY”. I walked away from my car and smiled as I turned around and read my new bumper sticker, “GOD IS MY CO-PILOT”.

I strutted into the airfield and beheld my shiny 747 Jet, ready for me to fly into the clouds. I proudly bounded up the steps into the huge plane. I noticed that I was the first one there as I opened the cockpit door. All sorts of lights blipped on and off. I walked forward and hung my captain’s hat on a special hook marked “CAPTAIN’S HAT”. Then I settled into the captain’s chair. I looked around and took a deep breath as I took in the sight of all the dials and colorful buttons.

I hadn’t heard Him enter the cockpit. I am not sure if it was because He was so quiet, or if I was so absorbed with being in the most powerful seat in the plane.

Ahem,” He said as if he were clearing His throat. He was really trying to get my attention.

I said, “Oh! Good morning God. Good to see you.” I pointed to the empty co-pilot’s seat. “There you go, co-pilot’s seat is waiting for you. Glad to have you aboard!” I was nervously cheerful.

Ahem,” God said again. “I think that you are in MY seat.” His voice was calm, but very firm.

“But God,” I whined, “can’t I be the captain today? I’ve always wanted to be in charge of this big airplane.”

God answered, “That is MY place. Unless you want an extremely bumpy ride, perhaps even crashing this plane into the ocean, I’d suggest you get up!”

“Rats!” I thought. I didn’t like what He was saying. He did know an awful lot more about flying this plane than I would ever know. “OK, here, you can have the captain’s seat.”

I got up, and God sat down in the captain’s chair. Right away he started pushing buttons and things that I hadn’t a clue what they were for. The jets started to fire up.

I started to sit down in the co-pilot’s chair when I heard, “Ahem.”

“Yes, God?” I said.

“What are you doing?” God asked me.

“I am going to be the co-pilot,” I answered.

God shook His head and said, “I am fully capable of flying this plane by myself. You’d only cause problems. You don’t even know what any of these buttons or levers do.”

He was right. I was disappointed, but He knew me well enough to know that before long I’d be pressing buttons and trying to work the controls. I’d probably crash the plane.

I slowly stood up. Frustration filled my mind. Then I spotted the navigator’s chair. Slowly I headed towards it. I was very quiet and hoped that God didn’t notice as I spun the chair around.

Ahem,” God said.

“Yes God?” I answered.

“Why are you sitting in the navigator’s chair?” He asked.

“Well, I just thought it would be fun to play with all the maps and gadgets.” I said.

God rolled His eyes, “Tell me, what does a navigator do?”

“Well, a navigator tells the captain where to go. He tells him when to turn the plane.” I said, hoping God would be impressed enough to let me navigate.

He wasn’t. “Don’t you think that I know where to take the plane? Don’t you trust me to not get you lost?” God asked.

“I do,” I answered. “I just wanted to do something about flying the plane.”

God was patient with me. “If you start telling me when to turn the plane, we will soon be very lost.”

He was right. I wasn’t even sure which direction I was supposed to turn the map.

I left the cockpit and sat in one of the passenger seats. As I clicked the seatbelt I heard, “This is your captain, God, speaking. Sit back and relax you are in good hands.” With that the Jet zoomed down the runway.

My dream was shattered by the sound of my alarm clock. The walls of the airplane turned back into my bedroom walls. My captain’s uniform turned back into P.J.’s . I sat up, and saw the sunlight streaming in my window. “ A new day!” I exclaimed. “Let me see, I’ve got a ton of important things I’d like to do today. I must make sure to accomplish everything on my list. Let me prioritize my day. Hmmm, Number one…”

Ahem…” God said.

Proverbs 3:5-7 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6)  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (7)  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.”
